REACH and CLP Regulations

The REACH* and CLP* regulations introduced by the European Union are designed to protect human health and the environment from the risks of certain chemicals.

The REACH Regulation, came into force in June 2007. It concerns all companies that produce, import, use or distribute chemical products or articles containing chemical substances.

The REACH Regulation requires companies to:

  • identify and register all chemical substances manufactured or imported in quantities above 1 tonne per year
  • ensure that products placed on the market respect the restrictions on use covering certain chemical substances
  • know the chemical composition of their products and inform customers if products contain substances of very high concern for human health and the environment
  • obtain authorization to use substances that are the most hazardous to human health and the environment.

The CLP Regulation (Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures), came into force in January 2009. It introduced a new system of classification and labelling in Europe designed to better identify the risks of chemical substances and protect workers, consumers and the environment.
