Viscosity

Development of an absolute viscometer
The viscosity scale developed is based on the viscosity of distilled water at 20°C. Starting with this measurement and using viscometers and fluids of different viscosities, the scale is gradually built up through successive extrapolations. By using viscometers covering this scale, LNE calibrates manufacturers' viscometers and supplies them with reference oils. The extrapolations on which the scale is based reduce the uncertainties, which can be relatively high for certain applications.

The aim of this project is to develop an absolute viscometer to cover a wide range of viscosities with a low degree of uncertainty. Its principle is based on recording the fall of a bearing ball in the fluid whose viscosity is to be measured.
