Regulations concerning fire safety of buildings will soon extend to evacuation performance. But digital simulation tools for this already exist. They model the evacuation of people in a fire scenario while taking into account the effects of smoke and fumes (toxicity, opacity) and their impact on movement.
If you wish to understand these concepts and familiarize yourself with the new simulation tools, ISMANS* and LNE are running a six-day course, from 31 October to 5 November 2011, on the principles and practice of evacuation modelling.
The first three days, run by Ed Galea, director and founder of the Fire Safety Engineering Group (FSEG), will cover the concepts and problems of evacuating people in a fire.
They will be followed by three days of training in the use of EXODUS evacuation simulation software, run by FSEG member Lazaros Filippidis, who has worked on developing this simulation tool.
