European Transfeu project: a new method for measuring smoke toxicity - November 2010

European Transfeu project

Coordinated by LNE and involving 21 partners in 10 countries, the European Transfeu project aims to develop the EN 45 545 standard covering fire safety of materials used in rail transport. Following 18 months work, the project has achieved its first objective by finalizing a method for measuring smoke toxicity. Details are published in a second newsletter reviewing progress made so far.

Working with two other partners, LNE has been directly involved in this key advance, which establishes a repeatable, reproducible methodology for predicting the effects of toxic fumes on passengers.

The project has now entered its second phase, the development of fire safety engineering methods using simulation tools. These computer applications will be used to simulate the propagation of fire and smoke, the incapacitating effects of fire on passengers, and the evacuation of passengers. Drawing on its expertise in this field, LNE is managing the development of these tools, which will be validated in 2011 with full-scale tests on two real coaches (one with an upper level).

For more information on the project, see the Transfeu brochure, newsletter and website.
