Relying on its core business, measurements and references, LNE builds for its customers and partners the technical solutions they need to meet their societal and economical stakes. On the basis of 5 activities: R&D, calibrations and tests, certification, training, technical assistance, combined with their 5 stakes of safety and health, environmental impact, performances, reliability, and cost control, LNE performs its mission as an independent organization dedicated to the general interest and companies. We chose to illustrate these points regularly in this newsletter. We hope you find this first issue informative. The Managing Director Jean-Luc Laurent Food safety: a shared challenge The consequences of reinforced safety and environmental impact reduction lead LNE to take charge of three new research projects, completing those it has been working on these themes for more than 10 years... Thermal conductivity, an important feature to improve information storage Knowledge of the thermal conductivity of materials used as means of information storage, in new generations of memory and rewritable DVDs, is essential to improve the performances of these products... France: pioneer for the safety of ethanol appliances In France and in other European countries, consumers have been seduced by these decorative appliances, of which hundreds of thousands were sold. Accidents that happened when they were used... Nanotechnologies: Kick-off of European standardization It is estimated that more than 2,000 manufactured nanoparticles (carbon, silver, silicon, titanium dioxides, zinc, cerium nanotubes, etc…) are commercialized in the world and integrated in hundreds of products (clothes, cosmetics and body care products, paints, sport equipment, toys, packaging, electronic devices…)... Supporting companies' applied research For the companies which face reinforced regulatory obligations and global competition, R&D is a crucial step. For their R&D services, having a technical referent able to support them in the development of products that are better performing while remaining certified is a significant asset... European standardization and French industry are exporting The implementation of quality infrastructures is a key construct to improve the development of French Industry in the countries involved in this process. The following reference documents, on which all the infrastructure will be based, will be chosen during this step: quality system, calibration, test, certification and accreditation standards.... 15th International Congress of Metrology Paris - 3 to 6 October 2011 Organised in partnership with LNE, the International Congress of Metrology is based on 6 industrial round tables, 180 presentations, 70 booths exhibition of equipment and services and technical visits to companies. Entitled "Added value for better meaurements", it aims: improving measurement processes in industry and laboratories. LNE teams who will make presentations at conferences, will also be present at MesurExpo in a booth D17 throughout the four days. 24th General Conference on Weights and Measures Paris - 17 to 21 October 2011 The members will notably discuss and decide on the measures required to ensure the expansion and the improvement of the implementation of the International System of Units, the SI.
